Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the ancient Chinese practice of inserting tiny sterile needles in specific points on the body to manipulate the flow of energy or Qi.  When your body is healthy this energy flows freely, but if there are blockages of this energy you may experience symptoms.  The goal of acupuncture is to clear the blockages to allow this energy to flow freely again to address your symptoms and maintain optimal health.  This unique treatment aims to get to the root of the problem and can often provide results when traditional treatment approaches cannot.

During pregnancy and postpartum our Qi can become blocked because of the changes that our body goes through.  This can lead to some of the very common symptoms associated with the prenatal and postpartum periods.

Common conditions that acupuncture can help with:

  • Back, sciatic, or pelvic pain

  • Stress and anxiety

  • Pregnancy fatigue or insomnia

  • Postpartum anxiety or depression

  • Pelvic organ prolapse

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Infertility

  • Morning sickness, nausea, vomiting

  • Breech Presentation

  • Labor Preparation/Induction

  • Immune support

  • GI issues

Labor preparation acupuncture can be done starting around 36 weeks to help the body prepare for labor.  Acupuncture can also be used to try to induce labor with induction points that help raise oxytocin levels to stimulate the body to shift into labor; however, the body and baby must be ready for this type of acupuncture to stimulate labor. If the body or baby is not ready, the acupuncture induction will still help the cervix to ripen, efface and dilate, but likely won't stimulate labor until your baby and your body is ready.
